Harlequin Alpacas

Hi and welcome to our website.

Appaloosa and Harlequin alpacas are gaining popularity, which is a good thing. They are beautiful and fun to look at. Harlequin alpacas as well as Appaloosas always grab the attention of a group.

However, there is another reason that Harlequin alpacas are important: their fiber. True Appaloosa alpacas are known for their exceptional fiber, which is often a result of unexpectedly emerging from elite breeding lines. The Harlequin alpacas could have grey fiber significantly more advanced than the average Classic Tuxedo Grey in both quality and aesthetics.

Sandhills Alpacas made the decision to do something new about three or four years ago. We didn't know how long it would take to find the Appaloosa Harlequin stud males of the quality we wanted. Popham Appaloosa Helos was chosen because of his fine, dense fleece. He is gentle and kind, much like his sire Ambersun Camouflage Popham. And he has the classic Appaloosa spots from head-to-toe. Helios is now a stud horse and is a gentleman with many girlfriends.

Then we continued our search until we found a gorgeous gray harlequin alpaca named Chalford Cappuccino. We are proud to announce that we now have Chalford Harlequins Abstract from Cappuccino, also affectionately called Jester. Jester is a beautiful stud male with amazing markings, colours and fleece. These two beautiful stud males will hopefully put us on the map for northern spotted alpaca breeders, specifically harlequin alpacas which produce such amazing fleece.

Grey Harlequin Alpacas have darker spots and speckles on their faces and bodies. The background of the spots is a light color (but not white) that blends with the darker spots to create the characteristic grey appearance. They can be clearly seen as cria, but they will eventually blend to grey at three to 18 months.

We are continually developing new ideas, one of which is our Alpaca Pods. The reasons behind theses Pods is we couldn’t find anything on the market that would be suitable for the Alpaca’s wellbeing. We have been supplying the Pods now for several years and based on customers positive feedback and requirements we keep evolving. We now have several new designs of Pods, including open ended pods, llama pods and larger 10ft wide Pods and even Pods with porches, these are proving to be very popular. We find our Pods used for sheep, goats, logs stores and even storage for sit on lawnmowers.

These are all exclusively designed, manufactured and erect on site by the Sandhills Alpacas team. We are very pleased now to have the protected designs for our pods and the UK Registered Design Number are 6031339, 6031340 and 6031342.
